3rd Annual Queens of the Burgh a Success
The third annual Queens of the ‘Burgh girls volleyball event once again highlighted some of the region’s best talent, with the Foxes taking home the championship after a dramatic run. Held August 2 at the All-American Field House in Monroeville, the event featured seven teams and 64 players representing 37 high schools and 10 clubs.
The Foxes, coached by Rollins College player Elena Arnold, rallied from an 0-3 start in pool play to win the playoff bracket, capped by a thrilling 28-26 victory over the Cavaliers in the title match. St. Joseph senior setter Kate Giannetta earned the team’s Most Valuable Queen honor, leading a roster that also included standouts like Beaver’s Aubrey Bumblis, Eden Christian’s Ava Arnold, and Mars’ Rylee Wooldridge.
The Cavaliers, guided by UVA Wise outside hitter Mailea Hufnagel, finished runner-up behind the steady play of Shaler defensive specialist Teagan Orga, their Most Valuable Queen. The event also recognized MVQs from across the field, including Mars’ Cece Christy and Beaver’s Kayden Blinn, underscoring the depth of talent in Western PA volleyball.
Founded by Avonworth coach John Skarupa in 2023, Queens of the ‘Burgh has quickly grown into one of the premier showcases in the region. Designed to relieve the pressures of high school, club, and recruiting, the tournament continues to provide a positive platform for athletes to compete, connect, and shine.
